culture-the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively.
communication-the imparting or exchanging of information by speaking, writing, or using some other medium.
there are two forms of communication; content and form.
content-what is being said.
form-how it is being said
communication goes in a straight line from sender to receiver this is called the "Process Approach"
there are two farms of culture; high culture and low culture
high culture is best described by Matthew Arnold who invented the "literacy canon"
literacy canon-a body of work in fields such as art, literature and music which represents the best
the literacy canon contains work from great people such as; Homer, Shakespeare and John Steinbeck.
the literacy canon faces many problems "such as dead white guys theory", which is the fact all the people in the literacy canon are all dead white and old. also new works are excluded from the literacy canon.
dead white mans theory leaves no room for new modern works
Raymond Williams said "Culture is ordinary, culture is everywhere" which is the complete opposite to what Matthew Arnold said.
Richard Hoggart agrees with Matthew Arnold and says "popular culture is dumbed down we should be looking at the culture elites"
Pierre Bourdien also agrees with Matthew Arnold and says "people who don't know about high culture are uneducated"
the Leavis's say - pop culture can be addictive and there for it is dangerous"
pop culture contributes to our personal identity, anyone can take part in it, it stays relevant and it gives us common ground with others.
However it is addictive and dangerous, it is also manipulative and Is also dumbed down.
Thank you for adding your notes, Alice.
